Sport Therapies

Sports injuries are most commonly caused by poor training methods; structural abnormalities; weakness in muscles, tendons, ligaments; and unsafe exercising environments. The most common cause of injury is poor training. For example, muscles need 48 hours to recover after a workout. Increasing exercise intensity too quickly and not stopping when pain develops while exercising also causes injury. If you have experienced an injury please feel free to contact us.

Registered Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is one of the many health professions in Canada that focuses on the treatment and prevention of physical injury and disease. Physiotherapists have completed a university degree and continue to up-grade their training with post-graduate courses. At your first visit, they will perform an assessment to prepare an individualized treatment plan designed to restore function. This may include manual therapy techniques to mobilize the joints and soft tissues, massage therapy to release the myofascial tissue, electrical modalities to control inflammation and pain, and exercise prescription to stretch and strengthen the muscles. There is also an education component to physiotherapy that will address posture, body mechanics, ergonomics, work habits, pathology, injury prevention and return to sport/recreation.

Rehabilitation is also a big part of physiotherapy to help people to maximize their function to return to daily activities after trauma, accidents or onset of any neurological disorders. In addition, chest physiotherapy will assist people to breathe better by maximizing lung function with breathing exercise and lung mobilization techniques. It is very beneficial for post-operation and for people with pulmonary diseases, such as cystic fibrosis.

Physiotherapists in Ontario are registered with and regulated by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario for the public safety. The college regulates physiotherapy provided by all registered physiotherapists but not physiotherapy provided by others.

Registered Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a comprehensive intervention involving a range of hands-on techniques to manipulate the soft tissues and joints of the body. The purpose of massage therapy is to prevent, develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function or relieve pain. It is a clinically-oriented health option that achieves undeniable results in the relief of an array of discomforts stemming from stress, muscular overuse and many chronic pain syndromes.

Massage therapists in Ontario are registered and regulated by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario for public safety. The college regulates massage therapy provided by registered massage therapists but not massage provided by others. These are the types of massage therapy offered at Freedom In Movement:

Swedish Massage:  This type of massage is the type that all registered massage therapists do on their patients. It is the basic form of massage offered in Canada. All forms of massage therapy done by a registered massage therapist can be covered by standard insurance coverage.

Myofascial Release:  This type of massage is the type that works on the myofascial layer of the body tissue. Myofascia is a connective tissue wrapping around our bodies. It keeps each muscle group and organ separate and attached do the spine. Myofascial release works to lengthen the myofascial fibers so the pressure on the muscles, joints and even organs can be less. Thus it creates more circulatioin and more space for our muscles, tendons, vessels and nerves to move in our systems. Less pressure and more circulation means less pain and more functional ability.

Pregnancy Massage:  Pregnancy massage is a special massage for those that are expecting, at any stage of the pregnancy. Pregnancy massage addresses the common issues specific to pregnancy such as low back pain, swelling of the feet, constipation, tension in the shoulders and neck and sciatic pain. It doesn't matter if you're expecting 1 baby or 3! Pregnancy massage is good for you! If you are having complications in your pregnancy and are concerned whether massage is right for you, consult your doctor.

Infant Massage:  Infant massage is for those little ones under a year of age. This form of treatment is indicated for babies with colic, digestive issues, or babies who just love to be massaged! Infant massage can also be a lesson for the parents. After a half hour massage, you will know all you need to know to give your baby a safe, relaxing massage- ideal right after bath time or before a nap!

Acupuncture and Acupressure

Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy, called "qi", that circulates through twelve invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. An imbalance in the flow of qi throughout a meridian is how disease begins. There are over 1,000 acupuncture points in the body.

Acupuncturists insert needles into specified points along meridian lines to influence and to restore balance to the flow of qi. It could also reduce pain and inflammation and restore function to achieve better joint/muscle function. Acupuncture is one of the most popular alternative therapies in North America with more and more research evidence.

Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and some accredited universities have programs to teach health professionals to perform acupuncture within their scope of practice.

Acupressure is a hands-on technique using pressure on acupuncture points to release tension of the muscles, joints and nerves. It is a great alternative for people who are afraid of needles.

Naturopathic Medicine and Nutritional Counseling

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, traditional Chinese medicine / acupuncture, and lifestyle counselling

A Naturopathic Doctor is a primary care practitioner that seeks to restore and maintain optimum health in their patients by emphasizing nature's inherent self-healing process. A Naturopathic Doctor views the individual as an integral whole including the physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors affecting health. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body and unfavourable lifestyle habits. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than disease as an entity. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease. This approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions. Treatments are chosen based on the individual patient, not based on the generality of symptoms.

Naturopathic doctors can also complement and enhance health care services provided by other health care professionals. They cooperate with other branches of medical science referring patients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate. Naturopathic Doctors provide patients with a truly integrative form of health care.

In Canada, the naturopathic medical profession's infrastructure includes accredited educational institutions, professional licensing, national standards of practice, participation in many federal health committee initiatives, and a commitment to state-of-the-art scientific research.
